The woodwind family is made up of a few instruments, however each instrument has different variations of itself. For example, you would hear a Bb Clarinet in the orchestra as well as the Alto Clarinet and Bass Clarinet. All of these clarinets have the same fingerings, just slightly different sounds. Woodwind instruments can date back to the cave-man days with these early humans making flutes out of bones and hollow pieces of wood. The saxophone is technically a woodwind instrument, however it is not found in the symphonic orchestra. Even though it is made of brass, it uses a reed to create the sounds, making it a woodwind instrument. Woodwind instruments include: bassoon, contra-bassoon, oboe, english horn, piccolo, flute, clarinet, and saxophone.
