The string family is made up of many instruments. It is the largest section in the orchestra- it has the most musicians playing the instruments. The violin, viola, cello, double bass, and the harp are the most common instruments found in the orchestra, but guitars, ukuleles, banjos and mandolins may also play with the orchestra. The violin, viola, cello, and double bass are made up of many pieces of wood which are only glued together with special wood. The frame of the instrument creates a hollow box that amplifies the sound of the instrument. The strings are made from animal gut, nylon or steel.
